NVIDIA has introduced the Ion platform, which combines the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (MCP79) with the Intel Atom CPU on a reference motherboard in Pico-ITX form factor.
The reference board features one SATA port, one DDR3 SODIMM slot, Gigabit Ethernet, USB2.0, DVI and HDMI output.
NVIDIA claims 10x faster graphics, full HD video decode & display compared to existing Atom + Intel 945GC/945GME chipsets, making Atom based system viable for 1080p playback, HTPC, and eventually light gaming.
We should soon see new products - netbooks, nettops, Pico-ITX/Mini-ITX motherboards - taking advantage of the NVIDIA MCP79 chipset (a welcomed improvement over the existing offering).
Hands-on feedback and pictures are now available; you can for example check AnandTech’s article providing more details on NVIDIA’s Ion platform here.
VR-Zone has additional pictures of the Nettop that NVIDIA presented - specifically the I/O board the Pico-ITX reference motherboard connects to for 2 x eSATA ports, 6 x USB ports, S/PDIF output, 7.1 HD audio output. Check it here.
